Class Name:

Difficult Conversations

Description:

We're taught to be nice, polite, and to not hurt feelings. This makes it difficult to have conversations where we will be communicating bad news, or pointing out deficiencies. Anytime we have to tell someone anything we don't think they will want to hear... it is a difficult conversation to have.  But realizing that sometimes hearing difficult things is the only way a person will be able to move forward, growing into a new path.  Whether it's delivering bad news, or telling an employee they need to make improvements, the information is the focus, and it's meant to help the person in some way -- not to hurt the person. Performance reviews are one area managers frequently struggle to be honest, because they feel a negative review, or making critical comments, will discourage or anger the employee.  This course teaches the best ways to communicate difficult messages, while also turning the discussion into a positive, growth-focused experience.

Class Name:

Report Writing for Warriors

Description:

Officers work so hard to be a warrior on the job, enforcing the law, investigating, being strong, and facing constant challenges. The reports of this work should reflect the strength of the officers and the details of the situation, rather than being just a skimmed-over summary.
This class will cover grammar, punctuation, spelling, and proper sentence & paragraph structure. We will also talk about how to make sure you include all the details in your report that will answer a lot of questions later. Included are some practice activities story-writing and narratives, to help you get into the flow of writing really good reports. Good reports will come from good field notes, so we’ll talk about making good notes and asking good questions as well. And then... who do you write these reports for? What will they use them for, and what are they looking for when they read them? We’ll talk about how to write for the real purpose of your reports.

Class Name:

Drugs, Brain & Behavior: What Cops Need to Know About Drug Users to Stay Safe

Description:

One of the more unpredictable encounters law enforcement officers face in our society is when they deal with drug-injured or drug-intoxicated people.  These encounters are at a minimum a challenge for communication, but can also turn deadly in a flash.  Knowing what drugs do to the brain, especially how they enhance the probability for violence and irrational behavior, is critical for officer survival.  This course will address that need, first by showing exactly how drugs affect the brain, then showing how this creates a different kind of behavior in which verbal communication is less effective and a propensity toward violence is increased.  Finally, guidelines for safely approaching, interviewing, and arresting drug abusers will be covered.  The instructor is a retired Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics Chief Agent who has 27 years of experience in this field and is also a professor in psychiatry at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine.

Class Name:

Overcoming the Stigma (52-week series)

Description:

We have a goal of overcoming the stigma associated with mental health. Officers experience a lot of difficult, disturbing situations, and they should not have to fear for their job security because they ask for help.

This weekly snippet-video series sends the ongoing message to officers & leadership that seeking help will make officers stronger, healthier, and more resilient - which results in safer outcomes.

52 weeks of video messages are included in this course series, totaling 8 hours of training for the year on this topic.  This gradual, consistent, ongoing saturation of the message will help officers & their leaders begin to value the importance of using mental health resources to stay strong and safe on the job. Every week you will receive a video-embedded email with a 5-10 minute video explaining the benefits of seeking mental health resources to deal with the compounded trauma experienced in your difficult jo. The videos will then be added, weekly, to the online classroom -- so videos can be accessed later, re-watched, or watched many at a time, in succession.

Un-Therapy: Mental Health for the Skeptic

Description:

If you’re in a career where you are expected to be tough, and strong, and never have any negative reactions to all the things you see on the job, you will be even more uncomfortable going to therapy or counseling, because doing so is sometimes seen as a weakness, or a sign that you aren’t fit for your job.  Learning everything you can about mental health issues, and about yourself, is the next best thing, if you won’t or can’t go to actual counseling.

If you’re uncomfortable with counseling, or with sharing your deepest emotions and memories with a counselor in a formal setting, you can still benefit from some structured self-assessment and education.  Sometimes we get in our own way, and can’t even see the causes of things that might be creating our biggest issues. This training course is designed to walk you through some self-assessment so that you can see areas in which you might need to focus some effort or make some change. By working through the exercises, answering questions, and taking time to reflect, you may discover the causes for feelings, emotions, and reactions by which you were previously confused.  Released as mini-sessions, weekly, over the year (January 1 - December 31), allows you to manage this 12-hour training by taking it in a little at a time.
