OSBI Investigates Multi-Agency, Police-Involved Shooting in Mayes County

The District Attorney for Mayes County requested OSBI investigate a multi-agency, police-involved shooting that occurred this morning in Pryor. A Grand River Dam Authority officer ran the vehicle tag of a Hyundai Sonata and discovered it was stolen last week from Tahlequah. That officer began a pursuit of that car at approximately 9:30 a.m. in Mayes County. The female driver, Claudia Taylor (d.o.b. 7-7-1980) of Tahlequah, stopped the car at the south edge of Pryor. She was taken into custody and booked into the Mayes County Jail for possession of a stolen vehicle. The male passenger, Dustin Shirrel (d.o.b. 2-19-1982) of Tahlequah, fled the vehicle with a handgun into a wooded area. GRDA officers, OHP troopers, and Mayes County deputies followed Shirrel nearly a mile into the wooded area from where he left the car. At some point during the search for the suspect, officers from each of the three agencies fired at Shirrel, killing him. Shirrel was on probation for possession of a stolen vehicle.

Several OSBI agents are on the scene to investigate the shooting. Once the investigation is completed, a copy of the report will be delivered to the district attorney. The d.a. will determine whether the shooting was justified.
