Agents Investigate Police Involved Shooting in Woodward County

The Woodward County Sheriff requested OSBI investigate a shooting by one of his deputies Saturday night in Mooreland. Sheriff's deputies were called out to 210 S. Elm in Mooreland about 11 o'clock where Jason Hopkins (d.o.b. 12-10-72) was refusing to come out of his home. He was inside with a Mooreland police officer who had arrived at the scene earlier on a medical call for Hopkins. When deputies arrived, they went inside the home. The Mooreland officer informed the deputies Hopkins had several knives. One deputy deployed his taser to try to subdue Hopkins. The taser did not have an effect on Hopkins. According to officers, the subject then lunged toward one of them with the knives when a deputy fired his weapon striking Hopkins. Hopkins was transported to a Woodward hospital then flown to an Oklahoma City hospital where he later died. The medical examiner will perform an autopsy this week. OSBI agents will collect information necessary for the district attorney to determine whether the shooting was justified.
