Delaware County Jail Escape Update

The OSBI is assisting the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office involving a jail escape of two prisoners and an apparent suicide by one of the escapees. Wednesday evening at approximately 7 o’clock several jailers were serving dinner to four inmates inside a jail cell. Once the jailers opened the cell door, one of the inmates struck the jailers in the head with a metal pipe from a tv stand. Devin Martin (d.o.b. 1/30/91) and Kyle Sutton (d.o.b. 9/30/86) then stole the keys to one of the injured jailer’s personal vehicles and left the area. Jay police and Delaware County deputies responded to the scene immediately and began pursuing the pair. Law enforcement set up a roadblock at the Eucha Bridge on Highway 59. One of the two found a pistol inside the vehicle. At Eucha Bridge the escapees began firing at officers. Officers fired back grazing Martin in the upper torso and flattening the car’s tires. The pair pulled off to the side of the road with officers in chase. At this point, Martin made a statement that he was not going to prison and shot himself in the head. Officers quickly apprehended Sutton and later booked him into the Mayes County Jail.

Martin , who was from Eucha, was in jail on a first degree homicide case on February 2011. Sutton, from Pryor, had been incarcerated on drug related offenses since November 2010.

The two injured jailers where transported to a Joplin hospital for treatment.
