INSTITUTIONAL FARMS MANAGER, I35
Positions within this job family are assigned responsibilities involving directing the operations of farm and/or and livestock programs, or food production and/or processing programs at a correctional institution.
The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:
The Institutional Farms Manager job family consists of four levels that are distinguished based on the type and complexity of work, and the responsibility assigned for supervision.
Level I Code: I35A Salary Band: I
This is the basic level of the job family where employees are primarily responsible for performing routine entry-level work. Incumbents are assigned responsibilities and receive formal on-the-job training for the supervision of inmates, and a variety of duties in the operation of a dairy, poultry, field crops, beef cattle, swine, equine, food production and/or processing, pecan production, or other state-operated agricultural programs within the Department of Corrections.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of livestock or field crop operations; of the safe operation, maintenance. and routine repair of vehicles, equipment, and structures of dairy operations; of the treatment of common livestock or field crop disease; of supervisory and instructional practices and procedures, including directing inmates and of a food production and/or processing operation. Ability is required to implement plans and programs in a variety of agricultural practices; to establish and maintain working relationships with others; to perform routine veterinary work; and to maintain records.
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of four years of experience in agriculture and/or food production or processing operations; or a bachelor’s degree in agriculture, food or meat science or a closely related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Level II Code: I35B Salary Band: J
This is the career level of the job family where employees are assigned duties and responsibilities for a full range of agricultural operations to ensure health and welfare of livestock and/or the quality and guarantee of a consumable food product. Responsibilities may include providing training and assistance to new farm managers in the completion of various duties.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include those identified in level one plus knowledge of DOC policies and procedures; of applicable policies of the Department of Health and the Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry; and of accounting procedures in a correctional setting. Employees at this level are able to maintain livestock health, have knowledge of the beef and/or dairy herd breeding operation, milk processing and storage procedures and policies, of egg processing, field crop planting and/or harvesting, food production/processing/ordering to include inventory and warehousing.
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level I plus one additional year of experience in agricultural operations and /or food production or processing operations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Level III Code: I35C Salary Band: K
This is the specialist level of this job family where employees are routinely assigned responsibilities for advanced level agricultural work related to maintaining and administering all livestock health and guaranteeing top quality food products for consumption and providing training and assistance to other farm managers. Duties may include oversight of a smaller enterprise within the agriculture or food production unit that may include, but not be limited to livestock feed production, dairy production, meat processing and production, and vegetable processing and production.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include those identified at Level ll plus knowledge of soils and soil conservation, Ability is required to complete oral and written reports relating to agricultural or food production programs.
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level II plus two additional years of experience in agricultural operations and/or food production or processing operations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Level IV Code: I35D Salary Band: L
This is the leadership level where employees are assigned responsibilities involving the management or supervision of multiple agricultural and/or food enterprises. Will directly supervise other employees, as well as perform managerial work in planning, developing and coordinating activities of the enterprise to include, but not be limited to purchasing inputs, record keeping and budgeting, livestock and feed production, food and vegetable processing, and overall enterprise management.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include those identified at Level lll plus the ability to manage and direct an agricultural or food production and/or processing enterprise. Knowledge of supervisory practices and principles and ability to supervise and direct the work of others.
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level III plus one additional year of experience in agricultural operations and/or food production/processing operations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
