The Honorable April Sellers White, Associate District Judge of Creek County
April Sellers White was elected Associate District Judge for Creek County in 1986 and has served in that capacity through seven elections, two of them contested. She grew up in Creek County as the daughter of Peggy Sellers (who taught Head Start in Drumright for many years) and Jack Sellers (a well-known trial lawyer), and is the first judge in a long family line of lawyers including her great -aunt, Crenna Sellers Dolge, who graduated from Yale Law School in 1929. She and her brother Jefferson D. Sellers, District Judge for Tulsa and Pawnee Counties, are the first and only sister - brother judge team in Oklahoma history.
After seven years private practice in the family firm, Judge White was appointed Special District Judge becoming Creek County's first woman judge November 1, 1983. Her judicial responsibilities as Associate District Judge since 1987 currently include felony trials, divorces, adoptions, child support enforcement, protective orders, weddings and traffic dockets. For over sixteen years she handled all the children's cases for Creek County's children. She has been active on local and statewide boards which address judicial and children's issues as well as active in her church.
Her lengthy list of honors and awards includes: 2008, Oklahoma Bar Association Mona Salyer Lambird Spotlight Award; 2008 and 2006, The Journal Record's 50 Women Making a Difference in Oklahoma; 2003, Outstanding Judge presented by Oklahoma BACA; 2000, Champion for Children Award presented by the Foster Care Association of Oklahoma, Inc.; 2000, Rape Crisis Project Award presented by Call Rape Foundation of Tulsa; 2000, Community Service Award from Sapulpa Schools; 1986, Outstanding Wildlife Judge of Year 1986, presented by the Oklahoma State Game Rangers' Association. She was a Pipeline to Politics presenter in 2008, a 2007 N.E.W Leadership presenter, and a 2006 N.E.W Leadership Faculty in Resident. She is a member of the Oklahoma Bar, the American Bar Association, and the Creek County Bar. She is a member of the Oklahoma Judicial Conference, co-chairs their Judges Helping Judges committee, and is former chair of their Legislative Committee as well as past Secretary/Treasurer. She is a member and former chair of the State Post-Adjudication Advisory Review Board.
In conjunction with her activities on the State Post Adjudication Review Advisory Board, Judge White together with two judicial interns, created a special form to accompany felony pleas when a Single custodial parent of minor children is going to be sent to prison. This form assists in completing background checks for people who will be raising that parent's children while they are in prison. Although Oklahoma law has for several years required such background checks, no form had been available to the judges to facilitate compliance with the requirements of the law. This form has been made available to other judges through her work with the Oklahoma Judicial Conference.
Judge White is the proud mother of Barrie Sellers White.
