Poisoning Prevention Resources

In 2013, Governor Fallin and many state agencies and organizations declared reduction of prescription drug overdoses a priority in Oklahoma, and a state plan was created. Developing and promoting the adoption of opioid prescribing guidelines for prescribers was a recommendation of the state plan. The Guidelines, developed by a workgroup of physicians, other medical providers, and related organizations are intended to reduce the misuse of prescription opioids while preserving and supporting the vital role of medical providers to properly and appropriately treat pain. Additional workgroups have been created to develop educational materials for the public and providers.

In 2016, an extensive review of the 2013 plan was conducted and priority solutions added. The 2016 plan, Reducing Prescription Drug Abuse in Oklahoma, represents notable progress since 2013 as well as an updated course of action needed to continue reducing prescription drug abuse in Oklahoma through 2020.
