Certified Healthy Oklahoma Annual Award Winners Announced

As part of an effort to create healthy places in Oklahoma to live, work, learn and play, the Certified Healthy Oklahoma program announced today that 1,146 entities have been recognized as Certified Healthy for 2013. This year, a total of 1,346 applications were submitted in five categories: business, restaurant, school, campus or community. The number of applicants and award winners each increased by almost 400 compared to 2012.

“The Certified Healthy Oklahoma programs are an exciting way to expand the Shape Your Future health initiative that challenges Oklahomans to eat better, move more and be tobacco free,” said State Health Commissioner Dr. Terry Cline. “The growth of the Certified Healthy Oklahoma program indicates the commitment that many organizations across our state are making to improve the health of Oklahomans. These organizations are leading the way by making the healthy choice the easy choice, and I applaud their efforts.”

For a list of award winners in each category, visit the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) website at
www.health.ok.gov. An awards ceremony honoring the winners will be held Feb. 13, 2014, at the Embassy Suites Norman Hotel & Conference Center.

Each of the five Certified Healthy Oklahoma categories have criteria for annual certification, ranging from supporting employee wellness through health screenings and education to providing a tobacco-free environment and encouraging healthy choices for staff, students and customers. Within each of the five categories, an applicant may be certified at basic, merit, or excellence levels.

The Certified Healthy Oklahoma program is sponsored by the Oklahoma State Department of Health, the Oklahoma Academy, the Oklahoma Turning Point Council and the State Chamber. The program began with Certified Healthy Businesses in 2003, and later expanded to include schools, communities, campuses and restaurants. To date, a total of 2,790 certifications have been awarded.
