Turning Point Conference and Policy Day is Sept. 10 - 11

Investing in Longer, Healthier Lives

Investing in Longer, Healthier Lives is the theme for the 16th Annual Turning Point Conference and Policy Day sponsored by the Oklahoma Turning Point Council. The conference will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 10-11, 2013, beginning at 8 a.m. at the Sheraton Midwest City Hotel at the Reed Conference Center, 5750 Will Rogers Road in Midwest City. The public is invited to attend. Early registration is $60 and closes on Sept. 6; on-site registration will be $75.

The keynote speaker will be Andy Goodman, a nationally-recognized author, speaker and consultant in the field of public interestcommunications. Along with “Storytelling as Best Practice,” he is author of “Why Bad Ads Happen to Good Causes” and “Why Bad Presentations Happen to Good Causes.” Goodman also publishes a monthly journal to share best practices in the field. In 2008, he co-founded The Goodman Center, an online school dedicated to "helping do-gooders learn to do better." Goodman will explain why storytelling is a powerful communication tool and he will offer specific ways organizations can use stories to advance their mission.

Additional program speakers and break-out sessions will provide the tools to assist communities in health improvement. Key topics include:
    * Best Practices for Tobacco, Obesity, and School Health
    * Mental Illness/Substance Abuse Prevention and Recovery
    * Building Community Capacity for Health Improvement
    * Certified Healthy Oklahoma!
    * Policy at the Local Level
    * Best Practices for Reducing Infant Mortality

The Annual Policy Day is combined with the conference this year to help set the policy agenda for community efforts in 2014.
