Warning Issued on Unlicensed Food Service Operators in the Oilfield

A booming oilfield business in many Oklahoma counties is resulting in illegal catering services not licensed by the Oklahoma State Department of Health, the _____ County Health Department warned today.

“Oil companies should know that caterers they hire to provide food services for employees should be licensed,” said _____.

“Foodborne illness resulting from improper food preparation by an unlicensed food service operator could be costly in lost production time,” _____ emphasized. Nationally, almost 130,000 hospitalizations occur each year due to a foodborne illness, with the average cost per incident totaling nearly $77,000.

_____ noted that licensed food service operators have received training in food safety issues such as food preparation time, temperature, food preparation location and product sources, as well as proper handwashing techniques for food service personnel.

“Oil companies should recognize many insurance companies require using licensed food service facilities and they could encounter legal risks using unlicensed food caterers,” _____ said.

_____ suggested oil companies ask to see a caterer’s food service license issued by the Oklahoma State Department of Health. “If you still have questions, give the _____ County Health Department a call,” _____ said. “We want to make certain oil workers out in the field are protected from foodborne illness.”
