_____ County Will Offer Flu Vaccine in October

The _____ County Health Department will begin offering flu vaccinations next month.

“Last year demonstrated how dangerous the flu can be for people of all ages,” said _____, administrative director for the _____ County Health Department. “Even healthy children and adults can become seriously ill with the flu, so help protect yourself, your loved ones and your community by getting a flu vaccination.”

Flu vaccine will be available at the _____ County Health Department for anyone who wants to be protected from influenza. The shot is now recommended for everyone over 6 months of age. Persons at high risk of serious complications from flu are especially advised to get the flu vaccine, including pregnant women and those persons with asthma, diabetes or other chronic conditions. Persons who live with or care for those at high risk for complications from the flu, including health care workers, should also get the vaccine.

Due to state budget constraints and the increased cost of influenza vaccine, this year local health departments will be charging a $25 fee for regular seasonal flu vaccinations.  Those with insurance and resources to pay will be assessed the fee. No fee will be assessed for persons who are on Medicare and do not belong to an HMO, for those who are on SoonerCare (Medicaid), and for those children who are eligible for the Vaccines for Children program. Others may be eligible for fee waivers based on income.

“The cost of getting a flu shot is a bargain when compared with the cost of having the flu and missing work or school, or seeking medical care if complications develop,” _____ emphasized.

_____ also reminded _____ County residents that influenza vaccine is very safe and effective. “We can’t predict when and where, but influenza will strike our county,” s/he said, “so help the flu end with you!”

Persons with questions are encouraged to contact the _____ County Health Department.
