International Rodeo Medicine Conference Starts Today in OKC

What: Second International Rodeo Medicine Conference

When: Thursday-Friday, Jan. 17-18, 2008

Where: Biltmore Hotel, 401 S. Meridian Ave., Oklahoma City

Featuring: North American rodeo and bull riding research and clinical medicine experts, as well as sports medicine physicians and athletic trainers from professional rodeo and the National Football League, National Hockey League, National Basketball Association, and other professional sporting leagues

Background: A colorful and popular sport in Oklahoma, bull riding, along with other rodeo events, can also be among the most dangerous, with frequent head and neck injuries reported among rodeo athletes. Oklahoma is a leader in research efforts on injuries resulting from bull riding and other rodeo events.

Today and tomorrow in Oklahoma City, the Second International Rodeo Medicine Conference will bring together North American rodeo and bull riding research and clinical medicine experts to discuss current research and strategies to prevent injuries in these sports. The conference is being held in conjunction with the International Finals Rodeo, also in Oklahoma City this week, and organizers say it will be the largest conference ever held on rodeo medicine. Participants from throughout the United States, Canada, and Ireland are scheduled to attend. The conference will also examine management of common orthopedic injuries resulting from contact sports.
