Walk This Weigh Gains Support for Community Healthy Living
National Public Health Week April 5-11

Walk This Weigh activates local communities with fun ways to stay fit and healthy. In its second year, the project is moving forward with ways to interest communities to find events or activities they can join to lose weight, become more physically active, and engage in a healthier lifestyle. Walk This Weigh is endorsed by the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH).

A number of Walk This Weigh activities are planned throughout the state from April’s Public Health Week observance through October, including the following:

Walk This Weigh - Norman

  • April 22, 12:00 p.m. - Andrews Park for Week of the Young Child in partnership with Success By Six & Adela’s Play House - led by OU cheerleaders and possibly Top Dawg
  • April 30, 12:00 p.m. - Andrews Park in conjunction with May Fair - celebrity walk
  • May 19, 12:00 p.m. - Cleveland County Family YMCA - celebrity walk led by Don Sherman, Board President
  • June - celebrity walk will be organized by the Performing Arts Studio
  • July - celebrity walker from the Oklahoma Electric Cooperative
  • August - celebrity walk featuring Ted Grebb with OG&E/Norman Chamber of Commerce
  • September - celebrity walk led by Uwe Von Schamann
  • Will begin implementing Family Spotlight program in partnership with the Cleveland County Family YMCA. YMCA will provide personal trainer consultations and nutrition education.

Walk This Weigh - Jackson County

  • April 17 - Walk in conjunction with event around National Youth Service Day at Altus Missile Park
  • May 1 - “Rock This Weigh” Walk in conjunction with “Rock and Rumble”
  • July 4 - Walk around Altus City Reservoir
  • August 31 - Red Bud Trail Walk
  • September 25 - Fitness Stampede (Altus to Quartz Mountain, walking, running, jogging, cycling) promotion throughout Southwest Oklahoma

Walk This Weigh - Cherokee County

  • Walk This Weigh weekly walks on Main Street, Tahlequah every Saturday morning.
  • May 29 - Memorial Day Walk on Main Street, Tahlequah co-sponsored by Main Street Association merchants.
  • October 9-All Frolic Walk on Main Street, Tahlequah - Saturday, co-sponsored by Main Street Association

    • May 8 - Stillwell: Strawberry Festival

Walk This Weigh - Choctaw Nation

  • May 1 at 10 a.m. - Trail of Tears 4-Mile Walk, Skullyville
  • Sept. 4 at 8 a.m. - Labor Day 5-K Run/Walk, Tuskahoma
  • Monthly Activity/Education Programs (Reach 2010)
  • Monthly Community Health Screenings
  • 5th Grade Diabetes Screening
  • October 24 - Diabetes 5-K Walk/Run, Talihina

Additional sponsors of Walk this Weigh include the McDonald’s Corporation, which has provided 10,000 pedometers for distribution to participating communities. McDonald’s will also include healthy eating tips on their tray liners, and offer public service announcements featuring Bob Green, best known as “Oprah’s Fitness Guru,” to air in participating communities to promote healthy lifestyles. In addition, Hillcrest Healthcare System has developed “Passport to Health” booklets to provide participants with healthy tips and opportunities to chart their progress to health.
