Nutrition and Arthritis is the Topic for the Sept. 2
Arthritis Network Meeting

Nutrition and its impact on arthritis will be the topic at the Sept. 2 meeting of the Oklahoma Arthritis Network (OAN). The OAN will feature a presentation and discussion on “Nutrition and Arthritis: What's Your Plan?”

Of those adult Oklahomans diagnosed by their doctor to have arthritis, 67 percent report they are overweight or obese, according to officials at the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH). Learning how to eat to improve your health can have a positive effect on people who suffer from arthritis and related conditions.

The meeting will be held Thursday, Sept. 2, at the OSDH, 1000 N.E. 10th Street, Oklahoma City, at 2 p.m. in Room 314. It is open to the public. The featured speaker is Sandy Richardson, a registered, licensed dietician with extensive research in obesity and weight management.
Richardson has a master’s degree in nutrition and dietetics and is Adult Weight Management-certified by the American Dietetic Association. She is an associate professor at the University of Oklahoma College of Allied Health, Nutritional Sciences Department.

Some of the major topics Richardson will discuss include the following:
· Weight Management
· Common nutrient deficiencies in arthritis
· Do I need a special diet?
· What about supplements and are they safe?

The OAN features various speakers and presentations for the public to help maximize the quality of life for Oklahomans with arthritis and related health conditions through developing resources, promoting access to health care and offering public health education programs. Currently, there are about 100 public and private health and non-health related organizations in the OAN.
