Mammography Toolkit for Medical Providers Wins Governor's Award

A toolkit that provides health care providers with a simple, easy-to-use reminder system for screening patients for breast cancer and ordering mammograms recently took top honors when Gov. Frank Keating recognized this effort with a Commendation for Quality award.

The "Provider's Mammography Toolkit" was developed by a work group formed by several sponsoring agencies to research and design a toolkit that would help increase the mammography screening rate for Oklahoma women.

The award noted that the toolkit was the result of an outstanding effort involving interagency cooperation to solve a problem. The toolkit was one of 69 competing entries in a competition directed by the state Office of Personnel Management.

Collaborating organizations in the Breast Health Education Starts Today (B.E.S.T.) work group, which designed the toolkit, included: National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Cancer Information Service (CIS) which is a cooperative between Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) Chronic Disease Service and the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, OSDH Chronic Disease Service TAKE CHARGE! OK Breast & Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, Oklahoma Foundation for Medical Quality, American Cancer Society, Project Woman Coalition, Oklahoma State Medical Association, Latino Community Development Agency, Mary Mahoney Memorial Health Center, Inc., Sisters Who Care, INTEGRIS, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, The Breast Screening Center, Oklahoma Breast Care Center, Oklahoma County Medical Society Alliance, and OU Breast Health Institute.

The toolkit also includes patient education materials, such as videos and brochures, and a statewide resource guide listing mammography facilities certified by the Food and Drug Administration and accredited by the American College of Radiology. More than 2,000 toolkits have been delivered statewide. Free literature, provider reminder systems, and patient education materials are available from the NCI, CIS, Oklahoma Foundation for Medical Quality, or OSDH Chronic Disease Service.
