County Health Department Kicks-Off Car Seat Distribution Program

A new Car Seat Distribution Program will begin this month at the _________ County Health Department in an effort to help reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries due to motor vehicle crashes among Oklahoma children ages 0-5 years. The program will target low-income families who lack access to affordable car seats, and will show parents how to correctly install car seats.

“Use of car seats has been estimated to reduce the risk of deaths by 71 percent and serious injury by 67 percent. Even though car seat use in Oklahoma has increased steadily, only about 78 percent of children less than 6 years old are currently using car seats. We see this as a way to prevent injuries, deaths and improve the health and safety of Oklahoma’s children,” said _____________ County Administrator ________________.

To receive a car seat, families must meet income guidelines for the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program. For the Oklahoma City and Tulsa metropolitan areas, Emergency Medical Services Association (EMSA) will continue to coordinate the car seat program.

Once an eligible child has been identified, a nurse, health educator, social worker, or support/clerical staff will complete an application for the client. Clients receiving a car seat will be required to sign the application, which includes a release of liability statement. The client will watch a video that discusses the importance of using car seats. After the client has watched the video, a county health department staff person will demonstrate how to install the car seat or booster seat in the client’s vehicle. The client will then be asked to repeat the installation while the county health department staff person watches. Each client receiving a car seat will be given a packet containing information about motor vehicle safety and airbag safety.

The __________ County Health Department will begin distributing car seats to eligible persons in July. For more information about the Car Seat Distribution program, call the  ___________ County Health Department at ______________.

The _______________ County Health Department and the Oklahoma State Department of Health Injury Prevention Service received funding to implement the Car Seat Distribution program from the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office.
