State Health Department Announces New Director of Minority Health

Jerry Regier, Acting Director of the Oklahoma State Department of Health, today announced the appointment of Demetrio J. Gutierrez, Ed.D., as the agency's new Director of Minority Health.

Dr. Gutierrez will work with minority and disenfranchised communities in Oklahoma to reduce the disproportionate number of preventable deaths, diseases and disabilities that occur among minority populations in the state. He will also facilitate a statewide Minority Health Advisory Network to support health education at the community level, particularly through church and civic groups.

Dr. Gutierrez's background includes public health experience at both the federal and state level. Most recently he served as a Federal Health Systems Specialist with William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, TX. Prior to that assignment, he was a Deputy Regional Director for the Texas Department of Health. His work history also includes experience in nursing home and hospital administration. He currently is a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army Active Reserve.

Dr. Gutierrez holds a Doctor of Education in Policy, Planning and Administration from the University of Southern California, a master's degree in Health Services Management from Webster University, St. Louis, MO, and a bachelor's degree in Health Care Management from Parkville, MO.

Dr. Gutierrez will occupy the position formerly held by Clyde Benn, who died earlier this year.
