Gary Cox, JD
Oklahoma Commissioner of Health
Gary Cox, JD, brings more than 40 years of public health experience to the role as Oklahoma State Department of Health commissioner. He received a Juris Doctorate from the University of Tulsa. Cox previously served as an adjunct professor of environmental law at the University of Tulsa College of Law and is presently serving as a visiting associate professor at the University of Oklahoma, College of Public Health.
Cox worked as an environmentalist for the Tulsa Health Department, where he went on to serve as Legal Counsel before eventually serving as Director for 15 years before he joined the Oklahoma City-County Health Department as their Executive Director.
His leadership accomplishments include Past President to both the Oklahoma Public Health Association (OPHA) and the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) who represent 2,800 LHD’s nationally. He serves on the Executive Committees for various national, state and local public health efforts. Cox chaired the Governor’s Joint Commission on Public Health, is a Fellow of US Public Health Leadership Institute and serves on the University of Central Oklahoma President’s Council of Advisors.
