Strategic National Stockpile (SNS)

What is the SNS?

The Division of the SNS is administered through the Center's for Disease Control and Prevention.  It is designed to stockpile large quantities of medicine and medical supplies to protect the American public if there is ever a catastrophic health emergency.  These stockpiles of material are stored across the nation in confidential locations.  For a state to receive these supplies, they must have a written plan in place and have run out of supplies needed to assist the community.  For more information on the SNS.

Oklahoma's Program

Oklahoma's SNS program relies on the coordination and collaboration of many partners.  At the state level, planning is focused on receiving and distributing the SNS assets with the help of state agency partners like the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management, Oklahoma Department of Public Safety, Oklahoma Department of Transportation, Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security and the Oklahoma Military Department and the Oklahoma Department of Corrections.  These agencies help support public health's role by providing security, transportation, warehouse needs and overall planning.  To view Oklahoma's SNS Plan, click here.

A major part of SNS planning is mass dispensing, or known in Oklahoma as the Mass Immunization/Prophylaxis Strategy (MIPS).  This enormous task is taken on by local communities and coordinated by the local county health departments.  Their partners include local agencies like emergency management, law enforcement, tribal affiliates, fire, non-profit organizations, schools, local planning committees, hospitals, private contractors and many more.  There are currently thirty-five communities responsible for putting together MIPS plans, but their plans incorporate surrounding cities, towns and counties to ensure a wide coverage for Oklahomans.  Click here to learn more about Oklahoma's MIPS Program.
