Social Distancing

During an Influenza Pandemic , it is unlikely a vaccine will match and be available to handle the virus during the beginning phases. Therefore, it is necessary to find other means of protection and use other defenses.

In February 2007, CDC issued mitigation guidelines. The guidance was developed through collaboration of public health officials, researchers, stakeholders from government, private industry and civic and faith based organizations.

The mitigation guidelines include social distancing strategies to help reduce contact between people. Less contact is intended to decrease the spread of the virus. Some of the strategies are school closing, canceling public gatherings, planning for liberal work leave policies, voluntary isolation of cases and voluntary quarantine of household contacts. Research and exercises are ongoing to find more information. As the knowledge base expands, guidelines will be refined.
