Parents as Teachers

Parents are a child’s first and most important teachers.

Families that do not qualify for Children First due to income, late pregnancy or previous children may enroll in Parents as Teachers- a free, home-based parenting support program that helps expand parental knowledge and better prepare children for school.

Families can sign up at any time from pregnancy until the child starts kindergarten. There are no qualifications to meet.

Personal Care

Home visits are also a key part of the Parents as Teachers programs. However, due to personal circumstances or preference, families can choose to start the program with visits in the Health Department or another location. Participants will learn what to expect in their child’s development and how they can help enhance development in language, cognitive, motor, and social-emotional domains by interacting with their child using Parents as Teachers activities.

Parent Educators also provide information and support on the following developmental topics:

  • Promoting Healthy Births
  • Breastfeeding
  • Attachment
  • Discipline
  • Health
  • Nutrition
  • Safety
  • Sleep
  • Transitions/Routines

Enrollment

Enrolled families receive the services listed below at no cost:

  • Bi-weekly personal visits
  • Activity supplies
  • Developmental screenings
  • Hearing and vision screenings
  • Monthly Group Connections events
  • Resource information
  • Book-sharing library
