*COVID-19, better known as the coronavirus, has taken the world by storm. Every time you turn on the TV you are bound to find a news story discussing the situation. Panic and fear has crept not only into our daily lives, but into the financial markets as well. Many of you have seen or heard of significant losses in the stock markets. This virus has no doubt caused, and will continue to cause, disruption in society, the global economy, and the markets.
However, the Oklahoma Firefighters Pension and Retirement System is confident in the long term sustainability of this plan. While this short-term shock in the global markets can be painful to watch, the investment plan that is in place has us prepared to weather a storm such as this. We take a very long term approach to the investments we make on behalf of the beneficiaries of this System. The time horizon for this plan is infinite, and as such, we are well positioned and prepared for what you see today. The long term prognosis is excellent, despite the short term impact we will no doubt see.
Rest assured that your Board, staff, and investment professionals are all working diligently to protect the assets of the System on behalf of the beneficiaries. Your benefits will NOT be directly affected by the market conditions. The staff is prepared to handle an outbreak and well equipped to continue operations. Your benefits will go out on time.
Bottom line, we are not panicked and neither should you.
