Building Permits
Building permits are required for many types of occupancies in Oklahoma. The general classifications for buildings requiring a permit are: schools, hospitals, churches, asylums, theaters, meeting halls, hotels, motels, apartment houses, rooming houses, rest homes, nursing homes, day nurseries, convalescent homes, orphanages, auditoriums, assisted living facilities, dormitories, factories, stadiums, warehouses, casinos, prisons and jails. Please CLICK HERE or call 405-949-2383 to ascertain if an Oklahoma licensed architect is required for your project.
For a statewide list of cities, towns, counties and colleges capable of conducting building plan reviews and/or inspections, please CLICK HERE. If the city, town, county or college having jurisdiction conducts the building plan reviews and/or inspections, it is not necessary to request building plan reviews and/or inspections by this Agency.
**UPDATE**Oklahoma Uniform Building Code Commission (OUBCC) has completed new code adoptions effective September 14, 2021 (http://www.ok.gov/oubcc/). State law mandates all plans submitted to the Oklahoma State Fire Marshal's Office for review and permitting shall be designed to those new codes adopted by the OUBCC. This Agency will not accept any plans prepared under any other codes than those currently adopted by the OUBCC at the time of submission after March 15, 2022. Until that time this Agency will continue to accept plans prepared under the codes that were in effect on September 13, 2021.
All plan reviews that do not fall within the above list of statewide cities, towns, counties or colleges having jurisdiction must be submitted to the State Fire Marshal's Office for review and permitting.

If plans are DISAPPROVED or REJECTED you must re-apply and re-submit all documents with full payment of permit fees again for resubmittal.
Certain buildings require plans be designed by an Architect. Please refer to the Oklahoma Architectural Act for more information.
Visit the web site of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) for read-only access to the NFPA codes and standards referenced in our state's statutes and/or regulations.
Those wishing to obtain a building permit must first determine if the property where said building is scheduled to be erected is on Tribal Lands. If the property is Tribal Lands our office does not have jurisdiction. In areas that are not Tribal Lands, those wishing to obtain a building permit must determine the authority having jurisdiction in the given area of the state where said building is scheduled to be erected. A number of cities will have the authority to enforce the state adopted building codes. Those cities not having such authority fall under the jurisdiction of the State Fire Marshal and must obtain a building permit from this agency.
A certificate of occupancy will not be provided by the State Fire Marshal's Office unless the building plans were reviewed and approved by this office.
