Arts Learning in Communities Model Program
Creek Council House Museum
The Creek Council House Museum utilized a grant from the Oklahoma Arts Council to offer a series of hands-on classes that taught participants how to create Traditional Creek pottery. The instructor, Crystal Hanna, discussed the design components in relation to the history and culture of the Creek people, and the learning aspects included the process of gathering the clay in nature, preparing the clay, creating the pottery, incorporating traditional symbols and designs, and firing the works of art. The classes were offered free of charge, allowing excellent access to the program. The class was comprised of people from diverse backgrounds and a broad range of age groups.
“The classes represent an integral facet of Creek Culture in the idea of passing the knowledge on to others and future generations. Having it in this video format is an extension of that traditional set of values we have.”
