Arts Education in Schools Model Program
Crescent High School students experience "Classroom Chihuly"
With a grant from the Oklahoma Arts Council, students from Crescent High School art department were provided the opportunity to experience “Classroom Chihuly.” An original program developed by Crescent High School Art Teacher Kristi Lovett Classroom Chihuly allowed students to learn, appreciate and produce glass works of art. The program consisted of students art history lesson, hands on activities (glass painting), a trip to the Oklahoma City Museum of Art to see the Chihuly works of art and a partnership with the City of Stillwater’s Multi Arts Center which provided a special glassblowing workshop with instructor Mark Gregory.
Students learned basic techniques and the process of glassblowing. Each student completed the class by creating a solid glass paperweight, using the colors of their choice.
Council’s Arts Education Director Aaron Jones was pleased with the combined partnership. “Crescent High School art teacher, Kristi Lovett, did exactly what we were hoping would happen in relation to our Small Grant Support for Schools. Kristi applied directly to the Oklahoma Arts Council for funds to bring the arts to her students. Her program, “Classroom Chihuly,” took advantage of a great opportunity for her school students and created a wonderful partnership with the Stillwater Multi Arts Center at the same time,” Jones said.
