Tulsa Awards For Theatre Excellence
Awards for Theatre Excellence
Announced for 2008-2009 Season
Tulsa, OK – The Tulsa Awards for Theatre Excellence (TATE) announces it will reward $20,000 for Tulsa's most outstanding plays in the upcoming 2008-2009 theatre season.
Funded and supported by the George Kaiser Family Foundation, the awards will be given annually to Tulsa-based, non-profit theatre groups and companies to publicly recognize and promote excellence in the theatre arts. The goal of the awards is to foster a broad-based, community-wide appreciation for theatre excellence within the city. Stanton Doyle, a spokesperson for the George Kaiser Family Foundation said, “Many may not realize the level of talent we have in our city. The Foundation believes that an awards program can help provide deserved recognition and support for Tulsa's theatre artists.”
Awards will be given for:
First Place for Outstanding Play: $10,000
Second Place for Outstanding Play: $5,000
Third Place for Outstanding Play: $2,500
Outstanding Children’s Theatre Production: $2,500
TATE Committee Chair Shirley Elliott said, “We hope the TATE initiative will give our local theatre companies both the resources and encouragement to create the next level in theatre production. Tulsa has a wealth of talented actors, directors and designers whose quality works deserve recognition. In addition, we hope the attention the awards receive will inspire the public to support these companies and to come out and enjoy the experience of live theatre.”
Only non-profit, non-equity groups and companies based in the City of Tulsa are eligible. Qualified companies may submit up to two productions opening between September 1 and May 31 each season for consideration. Applications must be received no later than four weeks prior to a production’s opening night, and the application fee is $25 per production. A select panel of anonymous judges will critique productions based on an established ballot that considers direction, acting, scenic and lighting design, and marketing, to name a few. Excepting children's theatre, musical productions are not eligible.
Committee member Ken Busby explains, “For now the TATE awards will focus on non-musical productions because we feel both the genre of straight plays and that audience deserve attention and cultivation.”
Winners will be announced during the first TATE awards ceremony in August 2009.
Applications will be available beginning September 1 online at www.tateawards.org and also at the Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa offices in Harwelden, 2210 S. Main, Tulsa, OK 74114.
For more information, email info@tateawards.org or call Ken Busby at 918 584-3333 x13.
