OKLAHOMA CITY – While people tried to stay cool this summer, many young Oklahomans hit the books with hopes of winning funds for college. State Treasurer Ken Miller today announced the winners of the Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan (OCSP) Think Big! Save for College! Sweepstakes – an annual partnership between the OCSP and Oklahoma Department of Libraries (ODL). Juniper Clough of Norman and Emily McBrayer of Idabel each received $2,529 toward an OCSP account. The libraries where Clough and McBrayer registered also received $1,000 cash for their programs.
As part of a National College Savings Month celebration, Treasurer Miller visited Norman Public Library today and presented child-category winner Clough and the library with their winnings. Miller, who also serves as board chair for the OCSP, said the goal of the sweepstakes is to remind families of the importance of saving for college now, as well as keep students reading during the summer months.
“The summer is a great time for students to continue learning about the subjects that interest them in school,” Miller said. “My hope is this sweepstakes encouraged them to visit their local library and keep building their knowledge of the world around them in preparation for future education and career endeavors.”
Anna Clough, Juniper’s mother, said she has planned to start a savings plan for her for a while.
“I, like a lot of parents, knew I wanted to start a savings plan, but it just kept getting put off,” Clough said. “Now, we plan to start putting money in her account each year.”
As the library where Clough registered for the sweepstakes, Miller also presented Norman Public Library manager Leslie Tabor with a check for $1,000. Tabor said the funds will be used to promote the summer reading programs at the library next year.
“We are extremely grateful to both the OCSP and ODL for this partnership and the funds we received today,” said Tabor. “This enables us to get a head start on planning next year’s summer activities and programs, and the money will go a long way in enhancing our abilities to serve Norman-area children.”
In its four years, Miller said this sweepstakes has awarded more than $22,000 to Oklahoma children and roughly $10,000 to state libraries. Launched May 15 and running through July 31, this year’s sweepstakes garnered more than 3,600 entries from program participants across the state.
