Although television is not altogether bad, too much time spent in front of televisions, computer screens or video games takes away from time that could be used for physical activity, reading, or spending time with friends and families.  Some interesting facts about screen time:

  • For preschool children (ages 1-4), a child's risk of being overweight increased by 6% for every hour of television watched per day.
  • If that child has a TV in his or her bedroom, the odds of being overweight jumped an additional 31% for every hour watched.
  • Preschoolers with TVs in their bedroom watch an additional 4.8 hours of TV or videos every week.
  • 1 in 4 children under the age of 2 years has a TV in their bedroom.

Make a commitment with you family to limit screen time to less than 2 hours a day.

  • Use the time you usually spent watching television to get out and Move More!
  • Think about going TV-free during TV Turnoff Week 2007.
