Dec. 15, 2011 Oklahoma State Board of Education Meeting Highlights

At it's Dec. 15, 2011, meeting, the State Board of Education adopted a Teacher and Leader Effectiveness Evaluation plan for the coming year and approved a budget increase request from the State Department of Education.

Public Comment Period Opens for Reading Sufficiency Act Reform Rules

The State Board of Education today opened a 60-day public comment period for proposed rules pertaining to changes in the Oklahoma Reading Sufficiency Act, enacted with the passage of Senate Bill 346 in May. A public hearing is scheduled for Feb. 16. The State Board of Education will consider adopting the proposed rules at its regular board meeting Feb. 23.

State Supt. Janet Barresi Congratulates ACT College Readiness Award Schools

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi recently received notice that 32 Oklahoma High Schools have been awarded the 2011 College Readiness Award by the Oklahoma ACT Council. The recognition means each school has shown a significant increase in its ACT composite score over the past five years, while at the same time increasing the number of students taking the ACT assessment.

Department Of Education Seeks Summer Food Service Sponsors

The Oklahoma State Department of Education is seeking sponsoring organizations for the 2012 Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). Eligible sponsors include public or governmental agencies, private, nonprofit residential summer camps and private, nonprofit organizations.

Oklahoma public school enrollment increases

Annual enrollment numbers provided to the State Department of Education by each public school district and charter school site in Oklahoma, show that pre-Kindergarten through grade 12 enrollment for the current school year is 666,150 – an increase of 6,535 students over the 2009-10 school year and 27,128 more students than five years ago.

Blue Ribbon School Nominees, Academic Achievement, Distinguished Schools Named

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi this week approved six Oklahoma schools to be nominated as 2012 Blue Ribbon Schools. She also recognized 13 schools as Academic Achievement Award Schools, accompanied by checks ranging from more than $61,000 to almost $25,000. And she recognized three schools as Distinguished Award Schools, two at the national level and one at the state level.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi has been invited to give testimony Thursday to the Kansas State House Education Committee about Oklahoma’s progress in passing and implementing conservative education reforms.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi will mark her support of National School Choice Week by participating in a panel discussion about Oklahoma school choice opportunities to be held Jan. 24 at the University of Central Oklahoma.

Oklahoma State Board of Education Meeting Highlights

The Oklahoma State Board of Education met Jan. 26, 2012, adopting a resolution to fully support Superintendent Janet Barresi's goal of having all students in Oklahoma college, career and citizen ready by the year 2020. Board member Joy Hofmeister, of Tulsa, was sworn in. The board revoked the teaching certificate of Kimberly Crain, a former third-grade teacher in McLoud. The board also adopted several new alternatives to help students meet Achieving Classroom Excellence requirements.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi announces a digital pilot program with Apangea Learning Inc. that is expected to significantly help students statewide who are struggling in Algebra 1.
