Oklahoma City (August 28, 2013) – Hundreds of high school students in Oklahoma are headed back to school this year with higher scores on their Advanced Placement* (AP) exams thanks to the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI). OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 12, 2013) – The State Department of Education’s Special Education Services Division has been able to save almost $8 million in a little more than a year without cutting necessary services to districts, State Board of Education members were told Wednesday, during the board’s monthly meeting.

Peter L. Markes, an 8th- through 12th-grade string orchestra and Advanced Placement music theory teacher from Edmond North High School in the Edmond School District was named the 2014 Teacher of the Year by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi during a ceremony Tuesday at the Oklahoma State Fair.

Five Rising Star Teachers Recognized at State Teacher of the Year Ceremony

(Oklahoma City) Sept. 17, 2013 - State Superintendent Janet Barresi recognized five Rising Star Teachers from across the state during Tuesday’s state Teacher of the Year Ceremony. Rising Stars are teachers who have been in the classroom seven years or less but who show an amazing amount of promise in their profession.


Today six Oklahoma schools were bestowed the coveted recognition of being named 2013 National Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education. Nationally, 286 schools were recognized with the Oklahoma schools being, Bartlesville Mid-High School, Bartlesville Public Schools; Central High Elementary School, Central High Public Schools; Chisholm High School, Chisholm Public Schools; Harding Charter Preparatory High School in Oklahoma City; Tulsa Eisenhower International Elementary School, Tulsa Public Schools, and Wayland Bonds Elementary School, Moore Public Schools. 

State Superintendent Barresi Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Kingdom of Spain

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi on Sept. 30, 2013, announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the State of Oklahoma and the Kingdom of Spain. She and Xavier Gisbert da Cruz, Counselor of Education for the Embassy of Spain, signed the agreement during a ceremony in the Blue Room of the State Capitol.

Oklahoma Closing Achievement Gap for Minorities in AP and SAT Scores

Participation on the SAT among minority students in Oklahoma has increased significantly over the past five years. At the same time, Oklahoma students continue to post SAT scores that are higher than the national average across all subgroups.

Representatives from College Board’s Southwestern Regional Office delivered the SAT and other test scores to the State Department of Education in a recent meeting.
