At the end of last summer, my two-year-old son Vincent was jumping off the diving board like a stunt man! This summer, only just last week did he make his first attempt off the board. I was struck by how quickly a child can lose his courage and freedom to take risk.

OKTOY Blog: The Year

I recently returned my affectionately named “free car” to the State Fair of Oklahoma, and I can't express enough gratitude for this incredible donation over the past year! While I only inched out 17,000 miles, a great summary of the year can be told through that little car.

The past month has been a whirlwind of sorts. I realized that I had a 1 in 12 chance of becoming the 2015 Teacher of the Year when I was named a finalist, but even then I didn’t really believe it would happen. It’s such a tremendous honor to receive this title, especially when so many of my deserving fellow teachers were also finalists.

The first Saturday of November every year holds a special place in my heart. That’s when high school distance runners gather in many places across the country to compete at state championships. This weekend I took part in such a display and was reminded again that our profession extends beyond textbooks, standards, assessments or trophies.
