Keynotes Announced for Summer Vision 2020 Education Conference



OKLAHOMA CITY (April 29, 2014) — The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) announced today the keynote speakers for this year’s Vision 2020 conference.

Vision 2020, OSDE’s annual summer conference open to anyone interested in education, will take place July 15 – 17 at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City. One general session featuring a keynote speaker will be held daily.

The keynote speakers will be:

  • Lee Roland, a principal in the Putnam City School District, on Tuesday, July 15.
  • Paul Tough, author of “How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity and the Hidden Power of Character,” on Wednesday, July 16.
  • Scott Barry Kaufman, author of “Ungifted: Intelligence Redefined,” on Thursday, July 17.

Roland is principal of Tulakes Elementary School in the Putnam City School District. Tulakes received a B+ on its most recent school report card while serving a high-poverty student body. Eighty-three percent of students at Tulakes are on free or reduced-price lunch.

Tough is a New York Times best-selling author. His book, “How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity and the Hidden Power of Character,” has been translated into 25 languages. In it he uses 20 years of research to examine the character qualities that help children succeed.

Kaufman is scientific director of the Imagination Institute. He earned his doctorate in cognitive psychology from Yale University in 2009. “Ungifted: Intelligence Redefined” explores the question of what defines intelligence and how to best bring out the talents in all students.
