State Superintendent Janet Barresi will honor 121 high school seniors from 41 communities Thursday night at the State Superintendent Awards for Arts Excellence Ceremony at the Scottish Rite Temple in Guthrie.
The students will receive a total of 131 awards.
The State Superintendent Awards for Arts Excellence recognize high school seniors who have achieved artistic and academic excellence and have contributed service to their communities.
“These students show a passion for the arts and outstanding leadership qualities through service to their communities,” Barresi said. “I challenge each of them to continue their pursuit and support of the arts and their involvement in civic life.
“Arts education is an integral part of our Oklahoma Academic Standards. I believe that students who excel in the arts acquire skills that are integrated into other areas of academic study and their adult lives.”
Barresi also thanked her co-hosts in the annual awards, the Oklahoma Alliance for Arts Education and the Kennedy Center Arts Education Network. The awards are underwritten by the Masonic Fraternity of Oklahoma, Ronald J. Chambers, Grand Master; in cooperation with the Oklahoma State Department of Education Arts in Education Director; Oklahoma Art Education Association; Oklahoma Music Education Association; Oklahoma Music Teachers Association; Oklahoma Speech-Theatre- Communications Association; and the Oklahoma Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance.
