Local high schools' average ACT scores presented to State Board of Education

The 2010 ACT college-entrance exam scores for each public Oklahoma high school were presented to the State Board of Education today during its regular monthly meeting. The scores, posted at www.ok.gov/sde, include both composite scores and subscores in the ACT-tested areas of English, reading (social sciences), mathematics and science.

"About 3 out of 4 students in the Class of 2010 took the ACT, which means the great majority of Oklahoma high school seniors are interested in attending college," State Superintendent Sandy Garrett. "So, the responsibility of every high school in this state is to make certain they are prepared for college and/or today's competitive workplace."

ACT scores primarily determine whether students enrolling in post-secondary institutions are required to take remedial courses. As such, the state Board of Education requires every high school principal to annually present the college remediation rates and the ACT scores for his or her high school at a public local board of education meeting.

The ACT is graded on a scale of 0-36. Oklahoma’s average composite score is 20.7, with 73 percent of seniors participating; the national average is 21 and a participation rate of just 47 percent.

Oklahoma high schools posting the highest average ACT composite score for 2010 (excluding the Oklahoma School for Science and Mathematics’ score of 31.4) are:

2. Classen School for Advanced Studies (Oklahoma City) 24.2
3. Norman North High School 24
4. Jenks High School 23.7
5. Edmond Memorial High School 23.6
6. Deer Creek High School 23.2
7. Amber-Pocasset High School 23
8. Arapaho-Butler High School 22.9
   Fairview High School 22.9
   Kremlin-Hillsdale High School 22.9
   Norman High School 22.9
   Putnam City North High School 22.9
   Stillwater High School 22.9

Typically, the larger the testing population, the lower the score. However, schools in Oklahoma testing the largest student populations also had among the state's highest scores in 2010. The high schools having more than 300 ACT test-takers in their Class of 2010* and the schools’ average composite score are:

1. Broken Arrow High School 710 test-takers, 21.9
2. Union High School 703 test-takers, 22
3. Jenks High School 512 test-takers, 23.7
4. Edmond North High School 458 test-takers, 24.3
5. Edmond Memorial High School 450 test-takers, 23.6
6. Owasso High School 433 test-takers, 22.4
7. Westmoore High School 357 test-takers, 22.2
8. Edmond Santa Fe High School 356 test-takers, 22.1
9. Putnam City North High School 346 test-takers, 22.9
10. Mustang High School 337 test-takers, 21.5
11. Bartlesville High School 320 test-takers, 22
12. Norman North High School 317 test-takers, 24
