Counselors of the Year, School Advocate of the Year Named

The Oklahoma School Counselor Association recently announced School Counselors of the Year and School Advocate of the Year for 2011-2012.

McLoud, Broken Arrow Educators Awarded Presidential Excellence in Math, Science Teaching

The White House this week announced 97 mathematics and science teachers as recipients of the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Oklahoma winners are: Ashley Moody, from McLoud Public Schools, for math; and
Rebecca Morales, from Broken Arrow Public Schools, for science.

Board Rules on Additional ACE Appeals

The Board approved recommendations on 12 appeals for waivers from Achieving Classroom Excellence graduation requirements. Of those, a committee appointed by the State Board recommended that approval be granted to three students, two of those based on extenuating circumstances and one based on acceptance to a selective university. The committee recommended that nine appeals be denied and that one appeal be dismissed because a diploma has not yet been denied.

Angela McKenna, a choral music director at Sequoyah Middle School in Edmond, has been chosen as an Oklahoma 2013 Teacher of the Year finalist. She replaces Kimberly Landers, a 9th- through 12th-grade Spanish teacher at Deer Creek High School, who has taken an administrative position in another school district.

State Test Scores Signal Positive Impact of ACE Reforms

Overall statewide scores for Oklahoma's lineup of core curriculum and end-of-instruction tests saw modest gains in a report released to the State Board of Education Thursday, with ACE (Achieving Classroom Excellence) end-of-instruction tests in critical math subjects showing the most significant gains.
