CyberPatriot Grant 2013‐2014 Information and Rules

The State Department of Education has approved a competitive grant  with CyberPatriot. Individual teams from Oklahoma public schools including charter schools, will be given the opportunity to apply for financial assistance to participate in the CyberPatriot Competetion. All grants will be allocated to the awarded teams in order to help support public school student participation in the CyberPatriot Program. The Oklahoma State Department of Education will provide grants up to $385 per school to cover entry/participation fees.

Each CyberPatriot team consists of two to five students and up to five alternatives. Each team will have a coach, usually a teacher. The coach does not require cybersecurity skills or knowledge, and only common computer ability. Teams may use mentors or technical advisors to help students prepare for the competition. Oklahoma’s AFA chapters and Rose State College will aid you in obtaining a mentor if needed.

Students compete in two parallel competitions: an All Services Division which includes JROTC/CAP/Sea Cadet student teams, and an Open Division which includes everyone else. The registration fee is waved for service teams so there is no need to apply for the CyberPatriot grant from OSDE. A practice round will be held in Fall 2013, and preliminary rounds (2) conducted online from the teams’ home locations. The final competition will take place in National Harbor, Maryland in March 2014. In Oklahoma’s first year of CyberPatriot competition, two teams advanced to the national finals with costs paid by the CyberPatriot organization.

Once your team has registered with CyberPatriot, you will receive software and training materials for your team to prepare and compete, along with participant kits. Oklahoma also possesses one of the nation’s four Cyber Security Centers of Excellence at Rose State College, where additional help is available.
