Oklahoma Achieves Flexibility from No Child Left Behind: New Waiver Provides Added Urgency to Implementation of State Reforms

Oklahoma is one of the first states in the nation to gain flexibility from federal restrictions under No Child Left Behind (NCLB), providing the state with an opportunity to move forward quickly with its own reforms.

A-F Grading

The importance of an A-F School Grading System is in that it will provide greater transparency for our schools and will draw more parental and community involvement. It is evident that schools that have higher levels of parent and community involvement have better-performing educators and better-prepared students.

The Oklahoma State Department of Education's Legislative Update newsletter is now available.

A-F School Grading System Rules Open for Public Comment

Draft rules and a rule intent statement for the A-F School Grading System and several other administrative rules have been posted on the State Department of Education’s website, under Implementation of a System of School Improvement and Accountability. The rules are open for a public comment period through March 19.

AP Report Shows Need for Wider Course Selection, Better Preparation

Oklahoma’s ranking of 37 out of 50 states and the District of Columbia on an AP report released recently by The College Board brought a call from State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi to widen the selection of AP courses available in Oklahoma schools and to work to continue to improve test scores.
