Superintendent Barresi congratulates five 2014 National Blue Ribbon Schools in Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 30, 2014) – Five Oklahoma schools were named 2014 National Blue Ribbon Schools today by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE), joining the ranks of some of the best schools in the nation.

USDE awarded the “Exemplary High Performing Schools” designation to Adair High School of Adair Public Schools, Bethany High School of Bethany Public Schools, Edmond Doyle Elementary of McAlester Public Schools, Reydon Elementary School of Reydon Public Schools and Southeast Elementary School of Jenks Public Schools.

Rising Star teachers named at Teacher of the Year ceremony

OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 16, 2014) — State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi recognized six Rising Star Teachers from across the state during today’s state Teacher of the Year ceremony at the Oklahoma State Fair. Rising Stars are teachers who show an amazing amount of promise in their profession. They are selected in addition to the 12 finalists for the state Teacher of the Year.

A-F Report Cards released for Oklahoma schools

The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) today released the 2014 A-F Report Card for public schools statewide. In this third year of A-F, more than one-third of Oklahoma schools improved their overall score, with 289 receiving A’s. Unfortunately, this year also saw a rise in F schools with 200, or 11 percent, as compared to 163 in 2013.

Tahlequah math teacher named 2015 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year at State Fair ceremony

OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 16, 2014) – Jason Scott Proctor, 35, a Tahlequah high school math teacher, has been named the 2015 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi made the announcement today during a ceremony at the Oklahoma State Fair.

Oklahoma begins task of compliance with NCLB after loss of flexibility waiver

In the wake of the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) decision not to extend Oklahoma’s No Child Left Behind (NCLB) waiver, state Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi today directed state education officials to immediately begin the task of compliance with NCLB, which is part of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).

21st Century Community Learning Center Grantees Announced

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi recently approved awarding almost $3.1 million in 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) grants to 13 recipients for a five-year period beginning with the 2014-15 school year.

Oklahoma requests extension of education flexibility waiver

The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) today filed a request with the U.S. Department of Education for a one-year extension of the flexibility waiver from the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (No Child Left Behind).

One condition of the waiver, first granted to Oklahoma in 2012, stipulates that academic standards for English and math must be college- and career-ready.
