State Board of Education Approves Budget Request

The Oklahoma State Board of Education on Thursday approved a fiscal year 2013 budget request for public schools — providing details on funds for statewide implementation of reforms, dollars to assist teachers and school personnel with health insurance costs, and a restoration of funding for some programs that were cut as a result of a state budget shortfall last year.

At it's Dec. 15, 2011, meeting, the State Board of Education adopted a Teacher and Leader Effectiveness Evaluation plan for the coming year and approved a budget increase request from the State Department of Education.

Public Comment Period Opens for Reading Sufficiency Act Reform Rules

The State Board of Education today opened a 60-day public comment period for proposed rules pertaining to changes in the Oklahoma Reading Sufficiency Act, enacted with the passage of Senate Bill 346 in May. A public hearing is scheduled for Feb. 16. The State Board of Education will consider adopting the proposed rules at its regular board meeting Feb. 23.

State Supt. Janet Barresi Congratulates ACT College Readiness Award Schools

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi recently received notice that 32 Oklahoma High Schools have been awarded the 2011 College Readiness Award by the Oklahoma ACT Council. The recognition means each school has shown a significant increase in its ACT composite score over the past five years, while at the same time increasing the number of students taking the ACT assessment.

2011 was a particularly transformative year for education in Oklahoma – from the date that Janet Barresi took office as the first new State Superintendent of Public Instruction in 20 years to the sweeping suite of education reforms passed by the state Legislature.

Oklahoma public school enrollment increases

Annual enrollment numbers provided to the State Department of Education by each public school district and charter school site in Oklahoma, show that pre-Kindergarten through grade 12 enrollment for the current school year is 666,150 – an increase of 6,535 students over the 2009-10 school year and 27,128 more students than five years ago.
