Red River Rivalry Means Big Beef For Winning Governor

Governor Frank Keating and Texas Governor George W. Bush will have plenty of beef on their hands as a result of this year’s University of Oklahoma-University of Texas football wager announced today by both state chief executives. It is traditional for the bordering governors to make a friendly wager regarding the outcome of the annual football game between the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns. The 92nd shootout of the college football classic will take place Saturday at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The Governor and Mrs. Keating will attend the game.

The two governors have agreed that the losing governor will donate a side of home grown beef to the winning governor who will then donate both sides of beef to the home charity of his choice. The payoff date will be announced at a later date.

"Last year I boldly predicted ‘OU by three’, the Big Red prevailed 30-27, and as a result Governor Bush traveled to Altus to feast on a little crow, a few ribs and a ton of beans at the OU-Texas border barbecue. This year the atmosphere is a little different. The Oklahoma State Cowboys burned the Longhorns last Saturday and this week it’s the Sooners turn, however this year I’m saying ‘OU by six’ and I trust Governor Bush will locate the largest side of ‘Bevo’ he can find after the U of O dehorns the Longhorns on Saturday," Governor Keating said.

Governor Bush countered, 'Last year’s outcome was a little disappointing for the Governor of Texas. I had to travel to Altus, Oklahoma to eat barbecue and a little crow at the same time. I don’t intend for that to happen again. I sense a tremendous feeling of overconfidence coming from north of our border. Even though I’m betting with my friend Governor Frank Keating on this game, when it comes to the Texas-OU game, all bets are off. I suspect the Sooners will be overconfident and fall. It’s a wonderful rivalry and fans throughout Texas are looking forward to it."
