Agents Thwart Murder for Hire Plot
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation was requested May 30th by the McClain County Sheriff’s Office to investigate a possible murder-for-hire plot. An inmate at the McClain County Jail was solicited by Cody James Sweetman (d.o.b. 09/28/1993), also in the jail, to kill his ex-girlfriend’s male friend. Sweetman offered the inmate $1,000 to commit the murder. The inmate declined the offer but said he knew someone in Oklahoma City who might be interested. That inmate then notified the McClain County Sheriff’s Office of the solicitation.
An OSBI agent and the inmate made a phone call to Sweetman on June 1st to ask if he still wanted his problem resolved. Sweetman stated he still wanted to hire someone. The next day, the OSBI agent contacted Sweetman via cell phone. During the conversation, Sweetman again stated he wanted the man killed and would pay $1,000. The agent and the suspect agreed to meet Monday, June 4th, outside Sooner Mall in Norman. Sweetman made that appointment and the two went inside the mall to further discuss the job. Sweetman agreed to pay $500 up front and $500 when the job was completed. During that conversation, Sweetman asked if he could have a second person killed. He asked that his ex-girlfriend also be murdered, both be shot in the head, and his ex-girlfriend be shot first in front of the original target so he could feel some of the suspect’s pain.
The “hit man” stated the price would increase to $1,500. Sweetman then asked the undercover agent to walk outside to the parking lot to his car so he could make the down payment. The two walked to Sweetman’s vehicle where the suspected counted out $230 in cash and made a handwritten receipt on a napkin.
Sweetman informed the undercover agent where to find the two victims. The agent agreed the murder would happen Tuesday night and he would bring Sweetman proof Wednesday morning.
This morning, the undercover agent met the suspect outside a Love’s convenience store on 1-35 in Norman to finish the transaction. OSBI agents arrested Sweetman at approximately 10 o’clock and booked him into the McClain County jail on two counts of solicitation of murder. Charges have already been filed.
