OSBI Awarded Second DNA Cold Case Grant
The OSBI is excited to announce that The National Institute of Justice has awarded the Bureau a second DNA Cold Case grant. The continuation of the grant allows the bureau to further review approximately 300 cold cases from Oklahoma law enforcement agencies. These cases involve homicides, sexual assaults, and other UCR Part 1 violent crimes.
Of the 300 cold cases, OSBI hopes to identify and analyze between 75 and 100 cases containing biological evidence. The award of another $474,341 will allow us to get closer to that goal.
The OSBI DNA Cold Case Unit involves people from different divisions within the bureau who work together to identify cases with potential DNA evidence, perform analysis on evidence, and enter eligible DNA profiles into the National DNA Index System.
The new grant award period is 18 months to start today, October 1, 2010. The funding will pay for salaries, travel for field interviews, supplies, and exhumations.
