OSBI Investigates Murder of 11-Year-Old Girl

The Bryan County Sheriff’s Office requested OSBI assistance in the homicide investigation of 11-year-old Dakota Cheyenne Hughes in Cartwright over the weekend.

The girl’s aunt discovered the body at approximately 4 am Sunday inside the aunt’s house at 375 Dogwood Trail.  The medical examiner will determine cause and manner of death.  Armed with information gleaned from interviews with family members, OSBI and Bryan County Sheriff’s Deputies began searching for Jason Lee Belew, 34, hoping he could provide additional information.

Less than 12 hours after law enforcement was notified of the murder, Belew was apprehended in Grayson County, Texas, on a warrant for an unrelated incident.  A few hours later, a warrant was signed against Belew for first degree murder in relation to Hughes’ death.  The next step is for Belew to go before a judge for an extradition hearing.  Depending on the outcome of that court proceeding, eventually he will be brought back to Bryan County to face the murder charge.
