OSBI Thwarts Murder for Hire Plot
OSBI agents arrested a Geary man Sunday on several counts of Solicitation of Murder in the 1st Degree. The bureau was contacted after David Phillips had several conversations with a private investigator he hired during a child custody battle with his wife.
In late September 2007, Phillips hired Kevin Stewart as a private investigator. Soon after Phillips asked Stewart to find someone to kill his wife. Conversations about the hit grew more intense in later months. By January 2008, Phillips also wanted his father-in-law included in the hit.
Sunday, March 16th, the two men scheduled to meet once again outside a restaurant in Calumet where Phillips would bring several hundred dollars as a down payment for the hits. During that meeting, Phillips also brought with him pictures of the two as well as maps to find the victims. During the conversation, the suspect added his mother-in-law in the hit list.
OSBI was monitoring the scene of the conversation on Sunday and arrested Phillips on three counts of Solicitation of Murder in the 1st Degree. Phillips was transported to the Canadian County Jail. The Canadian County Sheriff’s Office helped in the investigation.
