Handgun Safety & Training Certificates Valid for Three Years
House Bill 2874, which goes into effect on November 1, 2014, modifies the Self-Defense Act (SDA) so that Handgun Safety and Training Certificates will be valid for only three (3) years from their issue date. Previously, training certificates did not expire.
SDA applicants who have previously submitted a valid training certificate to OSBI will not be required to submit new certificates; however, applicants who have never submitted a valid training certificate may be affected. Effective November 1, 2014, those applicants will need to submit a training certificate that was issued no more than three (3) years prior to their SDA application submission date. Training certificates with issue dates more than three (3) years old will not be accepted; applicants will be required to re-take the training course and get a new certificate.
