basic purpose:

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving the overall management and operation of a historical museum, historic site or other facility of historic significance. This includes management of the daily operations, collections, interpretive exhibits, security, public contact and assigned staff.

TYPICAL functions:

The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

• Directs the operations of a historic museum or site or other historical facility; develops and administers budgets, goals and objectives.

• Determines need for new programs in areas of collections and interpretive exhibits; identifies and resolves problems; consults with senior curatorial staff and exhibits personnel and other staff to seek and implement solutions to problems or plan new programs or activities.

• Works with administration to plan special events and exhibits to promote the facility, including media exposure, brochures, posters, films, informational publications and other public relations and public service programs.

• Assures the facility is open and properly staffed during operating hours; supervises and trains assigned staff and volunteers.

• Oversees building and grounds maintenance; responsible for collections and management of use fees and admissions and sales receipts and for all fiscal property.

• Provides for the safety and security of the museum or site, collections and visitors and staff.

This job family consists of four levels which are distinguished by the level of responsibility and complexity of the operation.

Level I            Code: U11A            Salary Band: I

At this level employees are assigned responsibility for the operation of a museum or historic site of limited size and complexity. They are generally the only full time staff member, although duties may include the supervision of volunteers.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of basic math; of cleaning and maintenance for buildings and grounds; knowledge of American and Oklahoma history; of collections management and care; and of basic research methods. Ability is required to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and to organize groups of people.

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a bachelor’s degree in history, anthropology, archaeology or a closely related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of experience in a museum or historic site for each year of the required education.

Level II            Code: U11B            Salary Band: J

At this level, employees are assigned responsibilities for the management of a museum or historic site of moderate size and scope including the supervision of assigned staff and volunteers and the development of exhibits, collections or programs related to the museum or site.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include those identified in Level I plus knowledge of collections management and care; of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standard for Archaeological and Historic Preservation as appropriate to the site or museum; of applicable state and federal laws regulating historical collections and operations; and of principles of supervision. Ability is required to delegate tasks and monitor performance; and to assess the condition of buildings and collections.

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level I plus two years of experience performing work at a historic museum or a master’s degree in history, anthropology, archaeology or a closely related field; and one year of experience performing work at a historic museum.

Level III            Code: U11C            Salary Band: K

At this level employees are assigned responsibilities involving increasing complexity of the operation such as the size or type of the collections, the size of the property, number of buildings, size and composition of staff or the level of programming.

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level II.

Level IV            Code: U11D            Salary Band: M

Employees at this level are assigned responsibilities involving the direction of multiple facilities or sites. They provide direction to other managers in the operation of individual facilities and may also be assigned direct responsibility for a facility.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level consist of those identified in Level II plus knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a master’s degree in history, anthropology, museum studies education or a closely related field and three years of experience as a curator, administrator, register or exhibit designer/coordinator in a museum or historic site; or a bachelor’s degree in history, anthropology, museum studies or a closely related field and four years of experience as curator, administrator, register or exhibit designer/coordinator in a museum or historic site; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
