TRANSPORTATION
TECHNICIAN, #T21
BASIC PURPOSE:
Positions
in this job family are responsible for performing a variety of technical tasks
at state agencies involved in the construction and maintenance of state
highways and turnpikes or city and county roads. Tasks include field survey duties, construction inspection, data
collection, computer operation, and materials testing and sampling to insure
compliance with plans and specifications.
TYPICAL FUNCTIONS:
The
functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the
following:
Samples and
tests materials used in highway construction using testing equipment to insure
compliance with specifications.
Assists in
preparing progressive and final estimates and maintains records and diaries for
documentation of all work performed.
Acts as
project inspector on various types of projects to insure compliance with the
plans and contracts.
Operates
various types of survey equipment to determine grade and alignment of highways
and appurtenances thereof.
Conducts
traffic studies to aid in the determination of transportation system
improvements.
Performs
mathematical computations using standard tables, formulas and methods.
Collects
highway statistics and documentation on the state highway system; operates
computer in completion of daily tasks.
LEVEL DESCRIPTORS:
The
Transportation Technician job family has four levels which are distinguished by
the level of the complexity of specific job assignments, the extent of
responsibility assigned for a specific task, the level of expertise required
for completion of assigned tasks, and the responsibility assigned for the
supervision of others.
Level I: Code: T21A Salary
Band: F
This
is the basic level where incumbents perform entry level work in a training
status using standardized procedures to assist and/or perform non-complex
technical tasks such as surveying, research, planning, inspection, data
collection and materials sampling and/or testing.
Knowledge,
Skills, and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of basic
mathematics; of survey procedures; of plans and specifications; of basic
laboratory equipment; of construction materials; and of the English language in
order to follow written and oral instructions.
Ability is required to operate a variety of lightweight type vehicles;
to measure distance; to collect data; to operate computer equipment; to operate
survey equipment; and to use basic laboratory testing equipment.

Experience None required.
Level II: Code: T21B Salary
Band: G
This
is the career level where incumbents perform a variety of technical tasks at
the full performance level such as surveying, research, planning, inspection,
and materials sampling and/or testing.
Knowledge,
Skills, and Abilities
required at this level include knowledge of basic geometry,
algebra and trigonometry; of plans and specifications; of uses of basic
laboratory equipment and computer operations; of construction materials and
methods; of survey equipment; and of the basic principles and objectives of
transportation planning or research.
Ability is required to operate survey instruments and related equipment
for construction survey; to check and adjust survey equipment for accuracy; to
read and interpret plans and specifications; to measure and calculate areas and
volumes of work completed; to read and follow laboratory procedures; to perform
tests on materials in accordance with prescribed procedures; to make
independent decisions; and to operate and repair equipment safely.
Education and
Experience requirements at this level consist of one year of
experience in roadway construction inspection, surveying, traffic operations or
materials testing or other transportation related work; or an equivalent
combination of education and experience, substituting two college courses in
mathematics or engineering or a closely related field for six months only of
the required experience.
Level III: Code: T21C Salary
Band: H
This
is the specialist level where incumbents perform a variety of complex technical
tasks and may serve as a lead worker.
Incumbents will provide training and guidance to lower level
technicians.
Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities all those required at Level II plus ability to provide
training and guidance to subordinate technicians.
Education and
Experience are those in
Level II plus one additional year of the required experience
Level IV: Code: T21D Salary
Band: I
This is the
leadership level where employees are assigned responsibility for the supervision
of other employees in performing technical transportation related work. This will include responsibility for
assigning, reviewing, and checking the work of others, completing performance
evaluations, approving leave and initiating disciplinary actions.
Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities are those in Level III plus the knowledge of supervisory principles and
practices and the ability to supervise the work of others.
Education
and Experience are those in Level III plus one additional year of qualifying experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession
of a valid Oklahoma driver’s license at time of appointment in order to perform
necessary travel.
