BASIC PURPOSE:

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving the coordination, training and placement of individuals in community based vocational programs and developing and presenting curricula designed to increase a person’s capacity to live and work independently.

TYPICAL FUNCTIONS:

• Develops curricula to teach individuals skills in work routines and techniques, work processes and work-related habits; prepares lesson plans and instructional materials.

• May provide supervision to residential staff who instruct individuals in basic on-the-job skills and repetitive work tasks; performs task analysis and monitors individuals' progress in work and training programs.

• Coordinates trips to community work sites; acts as liaison between institution and community based work site.

• Monitors work of individuals placed in community work programs; assists community employees in formulating occupational goals for individuals; collects and interprets data and documents on-the-job training.

• Evaluates individuals' work skill level in various areas and designs programs to meet individual needs; maintains individual progress notes for all persons; participates in interdisciplinary team meetings and assists in determining goals and objectives for each disabled individual.

• Maintains individual progress notes; prepares reports of vocational training and progress made toward vocational adjustment.

LEVEL DESCRIPTOR:

This job family consists of only one level and incumbent employees are responsible for performing all functions associated with the position to which assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required include knowledge of principles and techniques of vocational guidance; of community resources; of available community resources for the employment of persons with disabilities; of basic health and safety precautions; of instructional techniques; and of supervisory principles and techniques appropriate for individuals with disabilities. Ability is required to exercise good judgment; to evaluate situations and adopt effective course of actions; to present ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; to plan and present a curriculum; and to secure and maintain the confidence and cooperation of individuals in training.

Education and Experience requirements consist of a bachelor’s degree and one year of experience in providing instruction in vocational training skills to residential staff within a domiciliary setting or a treatment facility for the developmentally disabled or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one additional year of qualifying experience for each year of the required bachelor’s degree.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Some positions in the Department of Human Services will require proficiency in manual sign language as demonstrated by the successful completion of a competency test administered by the Department of Rehabilitation Services.

Some positions in the Department of Human Services will require proficiency in Braille.
