INSTITUTIONAL FARMS MANAGER, #I35

Positions within this job family are assigned responsibilities involving directing the operations of farm and livestock programs at a correctional institution.

LEVEL DESCRIPTORS:

The Institutional Farms Manager job family consists of four levels which are distinguished based on the type and complexity of work, the responsibility assigned for supervision, and the size and scope of the operation.

Level I            Code: I35A            Salary Band: I

At this level incumbents are assigned responsibilities for the supervision of inmates, performing a variety of duties in the operation of a small dairy, poultry, field crop, beef cattle, swine, equine training or other state-operated farm program at a correctional institution.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of equine training, livestock or field crop operation; of the operation and maintenance of farm machinery; of the treatment of common livestock or field crop diseases; and of supervisory and instructional practices and procedures, including directing inmates. Ability is required to implement plans and programs in a variety of agriculture practices; to establish and maintain working relationships with others; to perform routine veterinary work; and to maintain farm records.

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of four years of experience in farm operations; or a bachelor’s degree in agriculture or closely related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Level II            Code: I35B            Salary Band: J

At this level employees are responsible for advanced level work in the supervision of a unit or program within a farm operation such as dairy, crop, beef, poultry or swine production, and may supervise other farm managers.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include those identified in level one plus knowledge of dairy, crop, beef, poultry or swine operations; of the treatment of common livestock, poultry swine, and crop diseases; and of record keeping and accounting procedures.

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level I plus one additional year of experience in farm operations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Level III            Code: I35C            Salary Band: K

At this level incumbents are assigned responsibilities involving the direction or management of a farm operation, medium in size, scope, complexity and diversification, and will directly supervise other farm managers as well as perform managerial work in planning, developing and coordinating a medium farm operation.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include those identified at Level ll plus knowledge of scientific principles, methods of techniques of farm and dairy management, of soils and soil conservation, field crops, animal, dairy and poultry husbandry and of record keeping and accounting procedures as applied to the agricultural industry. Ability is required to manage diversified farming; to supervise and train others in farm work; and to complete oral and written reports relating to farm programs.

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level ll plus one additional year of experience in farm operations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Level IV            Code: I35D            Salary Band: L

At this level employees are assigned responsibilities involving the direction and management of a farm operation large in size, scope, complexity and diversification and will directly supervise other farm supervisors as well as performing managerial work in planning, developing and coordinating a large scale farm operation.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include those identified at Level lll plus the ability to manage and direct a large and complex farm operation.

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level lll plus one additional year of experience in farm operations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
