POLICE
OFFICER
basic purpose:
Positions
in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving law enforcement
duties at a state agency, institution or facility. This will include conducting patrols in an
assigned area or location to enforce laws and rules and provide protection for
individuals and property within the assigned area of responsibility.
Typical functions:
The
functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the
following:
·
Patrols
an assigned area or location to eliminate hazards, vandalism or other criminal
activity; provides protection for individuals and property within the area of
responsibility; may carry firearms and be required to use force to enforce
security, apprehend suspects, or protect lives.

Directs
traffic in an assigned area and controls traffic entering and leaving parking
areas; enforces parking and traffic laws and regulations; issues citations or
makes arrests as appropriate.
·
Directs
police, fire and other emergency vehicles; provides assistance to authorities
in the handling or investigation of traffic accidents, fires, vandalism, and
other emergency situations and incidents.

Greets
visitors; answers inquiries; receives and relays messages concerning both
business and personal matters.
·
Provides
supervision or direction to an assigned staff; prepares and maintains necessary
records and reports.
·
Plans
and directs law enforcement programs; coordinates law enforcement activities
within assigned areas of responsibility.

on the level of responsibility assigned, the expertise required to complete
assigned duties and the responsibility assigned for providing supervision to

I Code: G28A Salary
Band: E
This
is the basic level of this job family where employees receive formal classroom
training and other training in law enforcement operations and procedures, state
and federal laws, self defense, firearms training, and other required areas and
perform entry
level duties involving police work under close supervision.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include
knowledge of routine police and security practices. Ability to follow oral and
written instructions; to give clear and concise directions; to make oral and
written reports; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with
others; and to effectively evaluate emergency situations.
Education and Experience: None required.
Level
II Code: G28B Salary
Band: F
This
is the career level of this job family where employees will be assigned
responsibilities for performing a full range of law enforcement duties and will
perform highly independent work in patrolling an assigned area and enforcing
appropriate laws, rules and regulations to protect and safeguard lives and
property within the area. Some
responsibilities may also be assigned for providing training and assistance to
others in performing these duties.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include those
identified in Level I plus knowledge of state and federal laws related to
public safety and criminal conduct; of traffic control; of methods and
techniques used in conducting investigations; of emergency response procedures;
and of first aid techniques and ability to react quickly and effectively in
emergency situations.
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of
six months of experience in security or law enforcement work or direct care of
juveniles in a secure residential facility.
Level III Code: G28C Salary
Band: G
This is the specialist level of this job family where
employees are assigned responsibilities involving advanced level law
enforcement work, which may include assisting in the supervision of an assigned
shift during the absence of the supervisor, assisting in making work
assignments, and supervising various investigations or other activities.
Knowledge, Skills
and Abilities
required at this level include those identified in Level II plus demonstrated
ability to perform advanced level police and security work.
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of
those identified in Level II plus one additional year of qualifying experience.
Level IV Code: G28D Salary
Band: H
This
is the leadership level where employees are assigned responsibilities involving
the supervision of others in performing police and security work. This will include scheduling employees for
duty, making visits to assigned posts to review operations, developing and
conducting training, and otherwise planning and
controlling the operations of an assigned unit or shift.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level consist of
those identified in level III plus knowledge of supervisory principles and
practices and the ability to supervise the work of others.
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of
those identified in Level III plus one additional year of qualifying
experience.
Level
V Code: G28E Salary
Band: J
At
this level employees are assigned responsibilities involving the direction of a
police and security program, including the supervision of lower level
supervisors who are responsible for various units or shifts that are part of
the program. In this role, they will
plan and direct all operations and activities related to the law enforcement
and security program, coordinate requirements with other law enforcement
agencies and officials as needed, and establish necessary policies and
procedures concerning traffic control, accident investigations, and other
functions.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include
knowledge of police and security principles and practices; of state and federal
laws relating to public safety and criminal conduct; of methods for protecting
individuals, property, and equipment; of the techniques of traffic and crowd
control; of the methods for conducting investigations and collecting evidence;
of emergency response policies and procedures; of police and firearms training;
and of supervisory principles and practices.
Ability to direct the work of others; to interpret and apply state and
federal laws concerning public safety and criminal conduct; to gather and
organize facts and evidence; to prepare clear and concise written reports; to
react quickly and decisively during emergency situations; and to establish and
maintain effective working relationships with others.
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of
five years of experience in law enforcement or security work or direct care of
juveniles in a secure residential facility including one year in a supervisory
capacity.

Some
positions may require education or experience in a specified field of law
enforcement.
special requirements:
Some
agencies may require one or more of the following:
a.
Must
be willing and able to complete all job-related travel normally associated with
the position.
b.
Must
complete the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training course within
twelve months of employment or have previously completed this training.
c.
Must
successfully complete a National Agency check for the purpose of gaining access
to restricted areas and/or obtaining a security clearance.
d.
Must
maintain a physical fitness standard that will allow them to perform the duties
of the position.
e.
Must
possess a valid Oklahoma Driver License at the time of employment.
Positions
within the Office of Juvenile Affairs will require the following:
a. Applicants must be willing and able to
work overtime and to work on shifts.
b. Employees are required to stand and
walk for prolonged periods and to have the ability to physically restrain
residents using approved restraint techniques.
c.
Applicants
must be able to lift 50 pounds.
d. Employees must pass all training
requirements for sole supervision of residents, i.e., first aid certification,
CPR and restraint training.
